National Eczema Week, which takes place from 16 to 22 September 2024, is organised by the National Eczema Society to bring attention to the challenges faced by those living with eczema. Eczema affects 1 in 5 children in the UK, and choosing the right skin products can play a large part in controlling symptoms.
What is eczema?
Eczema is a common skin condition that causes the skin to become dry, itchy, red, and sometimes cracked. It can affect anyone, but it’s particularly common in children. Eczema can be uncomfortable and frustrating, especially when flare-ups occur. The exact cause of eczema isn’t fully understood, but it’s thought to be linked to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Managing eczema in children
Use gentle cleansers:
- Bathe your child in lukewarm water, using a mild, soap-free cleanser and limit bath time to 5-10 minutes to prevent the skin from drying out.
Avoid irritants:
- Dress your child in soft, breathable fabrics like cotton, and avoid wool and synthetic materials that can irritate the skin. Use fragrance-free laundry products and avoid fabric softeners.
Manage itching:
- Keep your child’s nails short to prevent scratching and skin damage. Use anti-itch creams or apply cool compresses to soothe irritated areas. Try to distract your child with activities or toys to take their mind off the itch.
Control your environment:
- Maintain a comfortable temperature and humidity level in your home, using a humidifier if the air is dry, especially in winter. Avoid known allergens, such as dust mites, pet dander, or pollen, wherever possible.
Practice gentle skin care:
- Pat the skin dry with a soft towel after bathing, rather than rubbing. Apply moisturiser immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.
Stay consistent:
- Stick to a regular skincare routine, even when the eczema seems to improve, to prevent flare-ups.
