Spring Cleaning Your Hair Care Routine: Tips and Tricks from Original Sprout

Posted on April 13, 2023.

After a long cold winter, spring is finally here, and that means out with the old and in with the new. Your hair routine is a brilliant place to start, especially if you’ve been neglecting your tresses and leaving them tied up in a ponytail all winter. It’s time to adopt new products and routines to adapt to the changing weather. Here are some tips and tricks to get your hair spring ready from Original Sprout.

Purge your hair product stash

Let’s face it, many of us are guilty of hoarding half-empty bottles that we haven’t used in ages. It’s time to take a good look at your bathroom shelf and check for expiration dates. Clear out any products that are past their prime.

Expired hair products may not work effectively as intended, and in some cases, they may cause skin irritation. By doing a spring clean, you’re creating a more organised space and ensuring that you’re only using safe products.

Start with clean tools

We’re all aware of the importance of cleaning our make-up brushes to avoid bacteria buildup on our skin, but did you know the same applies to your hairbrushes? Over time, hair, dead skin cells, styling products and oil can accumulate in your brushes, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

To keep your brushes free from grime, make sure to remove built-up hair and clean them with a deep-cleansing shampoo at least once a week. However, if you use a wooden or paddle brush, be sure to check the manufacturer’s guidelines before washing, as water could potentially damage them. In most cases, a quick swish of hot water should be sufficient to keep them clean.

Deep clean your locks

If you’ve been going OTT on hair products through the winter months, you could be suffering from a severe case of product build-up. When oil, dirt and product accumulate, it can cause the hair follicles to block therefore resulting in an unhealthy scalp. But the right wash technique can make all of the difference.

Firstly, dampen your hair and squeeze a 10p size amount of our Classic Shampoo into your hands. Gently massage the product into your hair, focusing on the root and scalp. Then rinse.

Now it is time to repeat the first step, this time incorporating all of the hair. This allows your hair and scalp to absorb the nourishing and cleaning ingredients without the leftover product build-up in the way.

Now it’s time to condition your hair to close the follicles and seal in the goodness and moisture. Our Deep Conditioner is infused with Hawaiian kukui seed oil to help repair hair, leaving it silky and smooth.

Choose seasonally appropriate products

We should change up our haircare routine to suit the weather, just like our wardrobe. As the weather gets sunnier, your hair colour may fade, or become dry and brittle due to exposure to UV rays. Therefore, it’s important to take steps to protect your hair from the harmful effects of the sun.
Dry hair craves moisture, so we recommend adding oil-rich products like our Protein Hair Mist into your routine to repair and protect.
