National Eczema Week (13-19 September 2022) raises awareness of eczema, and the resources available to those that are living with the condition. Eczema is incredibly common, affecting one in five children and usually presenting before their first birthday. It’s an inflammatory condition that causes patches of sore and itchy skin. Itching is usually the first sign of eczema and may be accompanied by swelling or a rash, depending on your skin colour.
It can be very distressing for children and parents, and if you have any concerns about your child’s skin, your doctor or health visitor should be your first port of call.
Keeping skin moisturised and cutting out substances that cause flare-ups are the first two courses of treatment for eczema. Eczema triggers vary from person to person, but may include:
- Allergies
- Household cleaners
- Laundry detergent
- Chlorine
- Clothing materials
- Sun exposure
- Toiletries
Some children’s bath products contain ingredients that strip the skin of its natural oils, which can be particularly harmful to eczema sufferers. Original Sprout crafts all of its products with a focus on mild but effective ingredients, perfect for sensitive skin.
Organic calendula and refreshing rosemary extract help to lock in moisture in our 2-in-1 Hair and Body Babywash. Products that perform two roles are always a winner for us, and this nourishing formulation leaves hair and body squeaky clean and gently moisturised. It can also be used as a treatment for cradle cap; apply neat to the affected area, leave for one minute, and rinse. This is another product that’s popular with the whole family, so you might want to opt for our larger refill bottle to make sure there’s enough to go around!
Our Scrumptious Baby Cream provides essential moisture in a gentle soothing formulation. Fragrant rosemary naturally calms inflammation, while natural zinc offers a layer of natural defence against environmental stressors. We use an allergy-friendly vegan formulation containing no soy, gluten, honey, peanut or dairy. And don’t let the name fool you – the mild pH of 5.5–6.5 makes it suitable for everyone, from babies to adults.
We love hearing from parents who have used Original Sprout products to ease their children’s eczema. If they’ve worked for you and your family, please get in touch.
